Production

The Production Of Making A Film:

  1. There are 5 stages in making a film; theres scripting, preproduction then the production then after that theres the post-production and finally the distribution. The first stage in post production is the planning stage where you choose your basic workflow, such as offline and online editing (for projects with a lot of media) or editing the uncompressed footage (for shorter projects with quick turnaround times).
  2. The second stage in post-production is the setting up. In this phase, you set up your editing system by installing and connecting the hardware you need, as well as configuring your software. For example, before logging and ingesting, you need to connect your computer either to the video and audio from your camcorder or VTR (video tape recorder) or to a device containing your file-based media. You also need to make sure that the correct presets are chosen within Final Cut Pro.
  3. The third stage in post-production is the ingesting. in this stage this is when you actually film and record the film capturing, transferring, or importing video, audio, still images, and metadata to your computer’s hard disk, which creates media files. You can ingest media files at any time, although most footage should be ingested before you start editing.
  4. The forth stage of post-production is the editing. At this stage this involves taking the video and audio you’ve captured, along with any music or graphics you’ve imported, and arranging these raw materials into a final edited sequence of clips. Most editors start with a rough cut, where they quickly arrange all of the clips for a movie in sequence. Once that’s finished, they work on fine-tuning, subtly adjusting the edit points between clips and refining the pacing of each cut. Basic audio editing and synchronising are also part of this process, as well as adding transitions, such as fades and dissolves. Also in editing you mix in the audio which is when you can put in any background music. Then after thats done you add sound effects that are additionally needed.
  5. The final stage of post-production is when the outputting occurs which is when the film is complete and you start showing it in cinemas and the advertising comes into it . After this thats when it goes onto DVD and the availability to download it.

Distribution

An independent film is a professional film production resulting in a feature film that is produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system.

Film festivals are annual events which takes place to celebrate the art of film and the artists that produce it.Their role in the film distribution is to screen and judge independent films as well as provide recognition for unknown filmmakers.Distribution is essential to the film chain because without it - independent filmmakers will go unrecognised and if the filmmaker cannot secure a distribution deal then their movie will not be screened.

Marketing

Marketingthe action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.
Marketing is different to distribution because marketing is the propaganda used to promote the film whereas distribution is where the film is sent to in order to reach the audience. YouTube is one place where films are promoted, people tend too watch trailers for the ilms they want to watch in cinema.

Box office is when the film isn't released but you as the actor director or producer would go to the cinema where you would go and see the film before its actually released for the public. Once the Box Office is done and the film is premiered that's when tickets are bought or reserved or used to refer to the commercial success of a film, play, or actor in terms of the audience size or takings that they commandYou can calculate the success of a film by the amount of tickets that have been sold as well has how many theaters it has been screened in.The main way a cinema makes money is from advertising, refreshments and profit. They encourage audiences to visit rather than watch films at home by putting on cinema deals on certain days or making the whole 'cinema experience' comfortable by introducing 'VIP' leather seating.

The Film Chain

Production

There are three stages to producing a film; pre-production, production and post-production.

Pre-production
This is the stage in which all the planning for the project takes place. During pre-production, the production is broken down into individual scenes and all the locations, props, cast members, costumes, special effects and visual effects are used.

Production
This is the stage at which all the filming is carried out. All scenes planned out in pre-production are filmed at the relevant locations. This is where the strength of the pre-production work is put to the test. Great care must be taken to make sure that all the filming is done correctly and all necessary shots are taken

Post-production
This is the stage in which the film is assembled by the editor. The first job of the film editor is to build a rough cut taken from scenes based on individual shots. The purpose of this is to get the best shots out of all the takes.

Other styles of promoting are, trailers, bus adverts happy meals, internet banner ads, Facebook pages, twitter sponsored adverts and instagram.

The way films are promoted to different blockbuster films is the different strategies of promoting them for example a happy meal would promote a films for the younger generation, bus adverts for the general public. There is also films that produce subtitles for parts that are not in English.

Box office: a place at a theatre, cinema, etc. where tickets are bought or reserved or used to refer to the commercial success of a film, play, or actor in terms of the audience size or takings that they command. Box office return identifies the success of a film because it shows how much money was generated and how films are ranked. You can calculate the success of a film by the amount of tickets that have been sold as well has how many theaters it has been screened in.The main way a cinema makes money is from advertising, refreshments and profit. They encourage audiences to visit rather than watch films at home by putting on cinema deals on certain days or making the whole 'cinema experience' comfortable by introducing 'VIP' leather seating and so on.

The producer finds investors to pay for the film, and then they get back money proportionate to what they paid in. People involved in the film, like actors, can invest their own money as well, or work out an agreement to trade part or all of their salaries in exchange for part of the film's revenue.

Cinemas: The money you pay for your ticket goes towards the movie theatre. The movie studio leases the movie to the cinema for a period of time. In the first couple of weeks of the movie opening at the cinema the cinema only receives 20%-25% of the profit. The percentage decreases each week. The independent distributor also gets profit of the tickets sold by the cinema.
They also make their money from the snacks they sell to the customers. They make huge profit from the snack they sell. A bag of popcorn would cos the cinema 50cents however you would have to pay $5. A can of coke will cost the cinema 10cents but would charge you $3 for a can of coke. Thats where a massive part of their profit comes from.

Production

Stages of production:
Stage 1 - development: The first stage in which the ideas for the film are created, rights to books/plays are bought etc., and the screenplay is written.

Stage 2 - pre production: This is the stage which all the planning for the project takes place and during the pre-production, the production is broken down into individual scenes and all the locations, props, cast members, costumes and special effects and also visual effects are identified . In the pre-production stage the script is also complete and a detailed schedule is produced and arrangements are re enforced for the necessary elements or people to be available to the film markers at appropriate times.

Stage 3 - Production
This is the stage at which all the filming is carried out. All scenes planned out in pre-production are filmed at the relevant locations. Each scene is filmed as many times as the director deems fit, to ensure the best quality scenes will be used to construct the film. This is where the strength of the pre-production work is put to the test. Great care must be taken to make sure that all the filming is done correctly and all necessary shots are taken, as it is sometimes difficult or impossible to go back and repeat certain events if the filming is incomplete when it comes to the post-production stage.

Stage 4- post production: Is the stage in which the film is assembled by the editor. The first job of the film editor is to build a rough cut taken from sequences (or scenes) based on individual "takes" (shots). The purpose of the rough cut is to select and order the best shots. The next step is to create a fine cut by getting all the shots to flow smoothly in a seamless story. Trimming - the process of shortening scenes by a few minutes, seconds, or even frames - is done during this phase. As well as the editing of footage, all music, graphics, menus etc. are added in this stage. After the fine cut has been screened and approved by the director and producer, the picture is "locked," meaning no further changes are made.

Stage 5 - distribution: The finished film is distributed and screened in cinemas and/or released to the home video.

Production

There are three stages involved when producing a film - This consists of

  •  Pre Production
This is when you plan for the project you are going to film. This includes making sure you know what is going to happen in each individual scene with regards to props, location, actors/actresses, costume and so on.

  • Production
This is where the filming takes place. This can take a very long time as directors use this time to perfect each scene/shot so that when post production takes place it isn't as difficult to go back and repeat certain elements

  • Post Production
This is where the editing takes place. The editor's job is to cut, trim and add any necessary effects and sounds so that the final project is seamless and professional. When all of this is done - The final cut is then screened and approved by the director and producer no other changes can be made.

There are an abundance of well known film studios which include: Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox, Dreamworks and Paramount Motion Pictures. The ownership of the studio has an impact on what films the studio makes because each studio has films that it specifies in.Also if the owners has invested in a lot of money then the film is most likely to be of a high budget.

Independent Production: Is a production where an artist has complete control over creativity as well as editorial and artistic elements.

Distribution

Distribution: Is where you make the movie/film available for viewing by an audience.
- With this in mind, A film distributor job is to set a marketing strategy as well as  determain where and when the film is going to be made available to view ( whether it be in the cinema, at home viewing or on DVD

During distribution the following takes place

  • Someone has an idea for a movie.
  • They create an outline and use it to promote interest in the idea.
  • A studio or independent investor decides to purchase rights to the film.
  • People are brought together to make the film (screenwriter, producer, director, cast, crew).
  • The film is completed and sent to the studio.
  • The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
  • The distribution company determines how many copies (prints) of the film to make.
  • The distribution company shows the movie (screening) to prospective buyers representing the theaters.
  • The buyers negotiate with the distribution company on which movies they wish to lease and the terms of the lease agreement.
  • The prints are sent to the theaters a few days before the opening day.
  • The theater shows the movie for a specified number of weeks
  • You buy a ticket and watch the movie.

Film festivals are annual events which takes place to celebrate the art of film and the artists that produce it.Their role in the film distribution is to screen and judge independent films as well as provide recognition for unknown filmmakers. Filmakers whose movies get selected get an abundance of press attention as week as exposure to people that may buy the movie, agents and/or a cash prize. This is the traditional way of distributing a film, but as technology improves - more people are relying on online sources to get their film distributed. Distribution is essential to the film chain because without it - independent filmmakers will go unrecognized and if the filmmaker cannot secure a distribution deal then their movie will not be screened.

Marketing

Marketing: the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising.

Marketing is where you promote the something to a particular audience so that they become aware and distribution is making that film available to then view or sell to that particular audience.

Many films are promoted to suit different audiences from around the world. Some movies have sun titles or voice overs to suit non english speaking audiences.

Even though the actors/actresses are not speaking a different language they have subtitles to suit non english speaking audience
